Clovenfords’ Parliamentary Boundary
As the number of UK Parliamentary constituencies is reduced from 650 to 600, it has been recommended by the Boundary Commission for Scotland that Clovenfords is included in a new constituency, Midlothian and Tweeddale.
The village, and surrounding area, is currently in the Berwickshire, Roxburgh and Selkirk constituency which includes most of the Scottish Borders, including Galashiels. This new constituency would consist of the entire Midlothian Council area and two of the eleven wards of Scottish Borders Council, Tweeddale East and West.
Clovenfords and District Community Council has issued this response to the proposal.

Letter to the Editor
Hello.
I am writing to ask whether your readers may be able to help me. My mother, Jean Couper-Johnston was daughter of Dr Herbert Bruce Low and Ella Thomson his wife, granddaughter of John Thomson and great granddaughter of William Thomson of the Tweed Vineyard. She told us some of her mother’s memories of growing up in Clovenfords in the 1890s. During the 1950s and 1960s we often visited family in Rowanlea and have so many happy stories and photos from those days.
My mother was thrilled to stay with friends in Craigmyle Park in 2008 when she saw some old friends, the village and her beloved hills for the last time. Since then I have been finding out more about William Thomson and his great work as a gardener in Victorian times.
Kew Gardens and the Royal Botanical Gardens in Edinburgh have some interesting records. Copies of his book are still available in libraries worldwide and on the internet for very keen grape growers! I wonder whether anybody in the village, or their contacts have photos, newspaper cuttings or other interesting bits and pieces about William Thomson’s story. I’d also be interested in contacting family of John Thomson’s brother, William.
I was impressed to see the name for the road to the new village school – ‘Muscat Brae.’
I’m sure the opening of the new building will be a very exciting day for Clovenfords School after so many years tucked away along the Caddonfoot road.
Best Wishes for Health and Happiness to all in Clovenfords in 2012
