Scottish Borders Heritage Heroes

The Scottish Borders Heritage Heroes is a new social media forum & resource aimed at encouraging champions of local history, budding historians & researchers and volunteer archaeologists in the Scottish Borders.

As the forum develops it will become the place to go for:

  • Heritage news & events (talks, walks, conferences)
  • Keeping a watch on community archaeological digs & promoting engagement in local archaeology
  • Features on Borders towns & villages, championed by locals
  • Articles on Borders museums & exhibitions
  • Celebrating heroes who work tirelessly to preserve & promote our heritage
  • A place to work together, share enthusiasm & discuss Borders history

The venture is supported by Archaeology Scotland and was seen as an extension of a number of Archaeology Scotland Heritage Heroes projects in 2014 encouraging Borders schools and local history groups to investigate their heritage. We now have a great working relationship with some of Scotland’s key heritage organisations.

On Twitter, Scottish Borders Heritage Heroes has nearly 250 followers including the National Trust for Scotland, the Royal Society of Edinburgh, the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland and a host of professional and local archaeology organisations.

Throughout July, we have been promoting the heritage and history of Selkirk and sparking discussion and interest for future projects. This is aimed at inspiring champions of local history to promote their towns or villages in a collaborative environment.

It is hoped that in the future the forum will conduct local meetings, history walks and tours. From 2015 we have started working closely with the annual Borders Heritage Festival held every September.

If you live in the Scottish Borders or have an interest in the history of the South of Scotland then please follow the Scottish Borders Heritage Heroes forum. No experience is necessary – everyone with an interest in our heritage is welcome!
