Grow to Work is a new enterprise which provides employment and training for young adults who are unable to access these opportunities in the mainstream. Set up after Gregor and Deborah Scott realised there was little meaningful employment available in the central Scottish Borders for young people with learning disabilities, the programme now supports five trainees who are out of work for whatever reason and prefer a practical learning environment to classroom based learning, mainly working in rural skills on land at Thornylee.
There are ambitious plans for expansion over the next few years by taking on more trainees and volunteer trainers, and engaging in a range of different activities. During the recent winter weather, trainees helped out by clearing snow at Caddonfoot Hall and Church and are available for a range of contracts such as gardening and grass cutting.
